Mark: easy, at's-thay y-may other-may... Also, of course you are.

GG: Point definitely taken, but I don't think I explained myself very clearly. You're right - of course you have to be involved personally, but I think there's a line that's got to be drawn. I ran into this with my job at ASN too - I think being too willing to be BFFs with students can make it very difficult to do your job properly, although of course that's not the same thing as being personally invested in the TEACHING part of your job. The point that I was trying to make was that I'm worried that I spent a little too much time being the hip young friendly teacher who hangs out, rather than actually doing a whole lot of successful teaching. Blech. I MISS the library sometimes. I could do that job to the best of my ability, care pretty deeply about it, and still not lose sleep over it or spend large amounts of my free time worrying about it. I really don't think I'm cut out for being a career teacher.

The day that you quit getting personally involved with your students is the day you should quit teaching. Teaching is one of the most intimate human acts. Good teachers all know that. And that's why some of them become administrators.
