The Philippines - Getting Back, 5/1/08-5/2/08

We woke up on Thursday sunburned, blistered, and sore, and couldn’t even convince ourselves to go for a last swim. So we went out for breakfast at Paradise Grill (decent, relatively cheap breakfast stuff – bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc.), and then checked out of our hotel. We got a tricycle guy to take us to the ferry, and then rode over to Caticlan. From there, we found what appears to be the only hotel IN Caticlan – a place called Ecbe-le Hotel. Its advertising slogan is “Are you stranded?” The toilet flushes by pulling a string in the tank, but the AC works and it was as good a place as any to chill the hell out and nurse our burns while killing time until our 7:15 flight the next morning. This hotel was right next to the airport, which looks like this:

We also went out looking for an internet café, and found one – of course, “internet café” meant a computer behind the reception desk, which turned out to be broken, so we walked down the main road until we found one behind the pharmacy, run by an eight year old.

We had a good lunch at the A’reening restaurant, which was blessedly free of vendors, and an ok dinner at a really funny karaoke restaurant with a little kid singing an adorably off-key rendition of “Zombie” while the video screen showed pictures of topless models holding their breasts (or in one case, with a gibbon clinging to and covering her naughty bits).

The next day was long, long, long, but pretty easy. We made all of our flights and trains (although there was some frantic running through the Shanghai train station), and got back to Nanjing absolutely exhausted.

And I’m exhausted from posting all this, so, the end!
