im staying in the PI at the moment and i get told some of these stories…
the sigbin is the devil’s horse and it can turn into a cat, it also stays invisible unless it wants you to see it. the owner of that thing is always rich bcuz the sigbin steals for him and gives the owner luck in money

Thanks so much to everybody for all the added monsters and for commenting on my two and half year old and mostly ignorant post! Is there a Filipino/a monster that creeps into tourists’ brains while they sleep and then haunts them the rest of their life with the thought of how badly they want to go back?

Yup! We got lots of those in this country!
My grandmother use to tell me stories like that just so we won’t go out of the house the moment the sun goes down. And I can never forget nuno-sa-puso. it’s like a dwarf but very short tempered. If you walked on a termite mound you have to say “tabi-Tabi po” or they’ll get you!

The freakiest one would be the Door Knockers. They are like Banshees, but quiet. They come at night and knock on your door. If you answer it, a diseased or sickly person in your household will die.

what about the windi?
my aunt told me about them when i was little and how they would have to go in early because there would be a big creature with wings flying around at night and taking people and devouring them.

not all multos are bad,
the white lady does you no harm. she would only hurt someone if she had a reason to in her life, not just a random person.

hey thats awesome stuff. So a couple things I’ve found out for myself :)

You can divide Filipino monsters into two categories. “Aswang”(which you mentioned) and “Multo”.

The Aswang’s are the creatures you’ve mentioned. They’re the ones that have physical form and can mostly be avoided or stopped by doing certain things, such you mentioned.

A Multo, are spirits, like the “white lady” These ones are the ones to be afraid of because they can take possession of ones body, haunt places, causes curses etc. They are harder to stop and in most cases require a priest or witch doctor to exorcise.

And just to expand on the “white lady” No its not meant to be racist but it is the most common sighted specter in the Philippines. They are mostly seen in a white dress and are spirits of women who’ve died a tragic death.

“white lady” is another one. i don’t think it’s meant to be racist or anything. she’s dressed in white and floats around like a ghost, i guess.
